I came to Canada when I was 9 years old. At the time, the only english word I knew was ‘elephant’. I felt pretty handicapped without the use of verbal communication. I remember back when I was a curious kid, I wanted to know how to say boobs, so I pretty much had to act it out so my friend would understand what I wanted to know. Yeah, thinking back, I was a pretty awkward kid.
A year or two passed, I started listening to rap music. Don’t ask me how I could understand, because I didn’t, I just nodded my head to the gibberish. I started to listen to one particular track all the time – Gangster’s Paradise (Artist: Coolio). Determined to learn english, and learn the song, I first recorded the song by using a tape recorder and waited til it played on TV. I then grabbed a pen and notepad, and started to rewind and play the same phrase over and over again, so I can piece together the words to the song. By the time I was done, only about 10% of the song’s lyric in my book made sense, the rest was enough for me to mutter the words to sound like Coolio. After that I started tackling different popular rap songs at the time. Essentially, the hip hop music of the 90′s taught me english. I started rapping with my Black friends, and became the ‘nail-that-stuck-out’ kid around the block. I bet it was hilarious for them to cypher with me. Imagine a yellow kid, I looked quite nerdy too mind you, trying to rap with word that didn’t make sense. By the time Triumph (Wu-Tang Clan) came out, I was able to write 90% of the lyrics without having to rewind the tape as many time as possible.
Now moving back to Asia, although I can read, and speak (writing’s a different story). I again feel handicapped. Although not to the point I have to ask how to say boobs, but at a language level of grade school, I definitely feel lost when speaking with the average adult.
The reason I’ve created this blog is exactly this. To re-learn Chinese all over again. With the help of the web, blogs, and even my Mac, I won’t have to rewind anything by counting second in my head to learn a certain phrase. I’ve found numerous blogs, and site for me to learn. I’ve always lived by a phrase – “Goals are never achieved without a first step. When taken, never stop, let momentum take you the rest of the way.”
